Motion and Emotion

Adam Docker

09 October - 15 October 2024

Celebrated cinematographer and film director Adam Docker is set to launch his first solo photography exhibition, ‘Motion and Emotion’, at J/M Gallery this October.

‘Motion and Emotion’ is a captivating collection that showcases Docker’s exploration of identity, intimacy and living in the present moment. This collection ranges from intriguing portraits and cultural documentary to hypnotic, conceptual images clutching at the fleeting moments we rarely pause to appreciate.

This collection signifies Docker’s transition from a celebrated cinematographer and film director, with over twenty-five years of experience, to his debut as a fine art photographer. His film work has allowed him to travel the globe, from the depths of the Amazonian rainforests to over three-hundred cities worldwide, capturing famous faces and serving the commercial needs of each project. This project has allowed Docker to express his personal creative voice, and his heightened appreciation for the small details and seemingly irrelevant moments that remind us of the beauty of our temporal existence.

‘Motion and Emotion’ is heavily influenced by his background in cinematography, working with motion pictures and storytelling through capturing action. He has an intuitive sense for anticipating motion and subtle changes in the expression of mood, whether in a place or upon a face. He delights in breaking the typical rules of photography, injecting dynamism and a powerful sense of kinetic energy into much of his work.

“Words were never my forte; I always wished I had a creative mind for writing, I would have loved to have written a book about my travels and my experiences, but I could never find the words or the expressions. Somehow my mind is more visual, so I've accepted that expressing myself through pictures is what I do best. It’s important for me to establish a connection and understanding with the people and places I photograph. I’m looking to capture a story, an energy, a feeling. My approach is organic and fluid; I often shoot unexpected or candid moments, which I hope captures something profound that I am feeling in the moment, a glimpse into an authentic, vulnerable, and human side of the subject matter.” Adam Docker
