Serge Labégorre
Serge Labégorre
28 June - 04 July 2023
Serge Labegorre is considered one of the greatest living French expressionists, he was awarded ‘Legion d’Honneur’ for his contribution to national art by the French Prime minister in 2009 and the much coveted ‘Grand Prize’ of the Taylor Foundation in 2014. In his career spanning several decades Labegorre has exhibited all over the world, San Francisco, New York, Paris, Los Angeles, Taiwan, Bordeaux and even Egypt... but never in London .
The Artist has trusted very few agents with his works over the years refusing famously to collaborate with one of the biggest Asian art dealers as this would become ‘painting to order’ . He says of his art “Painting is a desire, I let what I carry inside me unknowingly of violence, heartbreak, suffering and love emerge, and I try to tune into it.” Jessica feels honoured to have been given his complete trust and the exclusive rights to all his works here in the UK - having been to Bordeaux to select the works in person.
“My late grandfather David Goodman, Artist, fellow Art Agent, Gallery owner and founder of the Chichester Society first discovered Serge Labgeorre in 1968 in France. Working alongside Sir Lawrence Olivier he offered to represent the talented young artist at The Chichester Festival, Serge left his job as a teacher and spent a year painting for the festival. As promised it launched his long and successful career and a long personal and professional relationship blossomed between he and my grandfather. Bringing Serge and his unique work back to the UK for the first time, and for his debut London Exhibition, feels like we are completing the journey he and my grandfather started all those years ago.” - Curator Jessica Anselm
The exhibition is on view from 28 June - 4 July, available for walk-ins between 11 am - 4 pm at the J/M Gallery, 230 Portobello Road, W11 1LJ. For more information, visit www.jessicaanselm.com
