The Watcher

Gallery M Platform

30 October - 05 November

Gallery M Platform is pleased to present the upcoming group exhibition 'The Watcher'. The exhibition is a collaborative exploration of sustainability and environmental consciousness, featuring artworks by Sean Powers, Soryun Ahn, Shafina Jaffer, and Prachi Gothi, curated by Mari Kim.

This exhibition shows how each artist, through their unique perspectives, addresses contemporary environmental issues and sustainability, compelling us to reflect on and act against the global environmental
challenges brought about by humanity’s reckless exploitation of natural resources and the destruction of ecosystems. Through the artists’ works the exhibition captures a profound blend of cynicism, sorrow, spirituality and nostalgia that speaks to the heart of our shared humanity.

Sean Powers’ abstract landscape paintings intertwine themes of ufology and sustainability, portraying spaceships within nature to symbolise plants, trees, flowers and rocks as silent watchers. These natural elements patiently observe humanity’s dependence on them for survival and healing.

Soryun Ahn’s works offer a divine perspective. Saintly figures with merciful eyes gaze down on the world, their expressions filled with compassion and sorrow for humanity. These poignant human figures, with their saint-like regard, reflect on the world’s sinfulness and convey the sorrow of divine beings as they witness the
planet’s struggles.

Similarly, Shafina Jaffer’s art weaves together themes of nature, science, philosophy and spirituality, exploring the profound interconnectedness of all living things. Her works focus on the humanist theme of unity, symbolised as nature’s watchful eyes, represented by the fiery whales and the waves of the sea.

Jaffer’s works advocate for global harmony and the importance in unity amid conflicts driven by faith,
ideology, race, culture and socioeconomic disparities. She offers a vision of hope, emphasising the universal spiritual energy that binds together humanity and the natural world.

On the other hand, Prachi Gothi’s works evoke nostalgia, a yearning for a ‘secret forest’ or ‘dreamscape’ beyond the harsh realities of the contemporary world. Her art, steeped in memories of childhood, creates a sense of longing for a peaceful, idyllic world in stark contrast to the destruction brought about by humanity’s greed.

Together, these four artists present a profound narrative on nature, unity, nostalgia and humanity’s impact on the planet. As human beings we do not exist in isolation; we are intricately connected to the natural environment and to each other. Yet our relentless pursuit of material wealth and the selfishness born of human greed disrupt this balance. The consequences are visible in the degradation of our ecosystems
and the broken relationship between humanity and the natural world.

This exhibition serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to restore harmony and protect our fragile global environment. It calls on viewers to recognise their role in safeguarding the earth and to act with greater environmental consciousness, cultivating a deeper awareness of the interdependence that binds us all. We warmly welcome you to the exhibition 'The Watcher', where you will witness the
culmination of their artistic exploration of the profound narratives.
